Marea : The Mermaid

Marea : The Mermaid takes its cue from Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid and retells the familiar tale through an environmental lens. What captures Marea is not a prince but human culture itself. Drawn to its brilliance and beauty, and to the way people live, she leaves the sea dreaming of becoming part of that world. What she finds is a shoreline fouled with oil, with plastic, with everything human consumption leaves behind. The closer she comes to the life she once longed for, the more clearly she sees that every step she takes is charged to the sea she came from. Fairy tale fantasy meets the environmental present here, and a familiar story of longing opens out into one about desire, about consumption, and about the unseen price nature pays for both.
