Those who remain

Summer of 2014, Japan. A friend has not come to school for days, so the children set out with their teacher to find the friend's house. The teacher has to turn back along the way, and the children walk on alone. That day the rain starts. In the downpour a landslide takes the whole village in seconds, as though nothing had ever stood there. The teacher returns too late and waits for the children who do not come back, with no end to the waiting, in that same spot.
